Guided Imagery and Music
The Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music (“The Bonny Method” or GIM) is used by individuals seeking a deeper connection with their life's journey. The Bonny Method combines music and the spontaneous imagery it evokes to form a powerful tool for self-exploration and discovery.
This method was developed by Helen L. Bonny, RMT, Ph.D., in the 1970s. She combined relaxation techniques with selections of classical music to allow clients to connect with their deeper, inner self. Since that time, GIM has evolved into a primary psychotherapeutic modality and there are GIM practitioners all over the world.
The Bonny Method has been used with a wide variety of client populations. It has been successfully used with individuals and groups, as well as adults and children. GIM is effective in treating all kinds of stress related, emotional and physical disorders, addictions and recovery as well as with people interested in expanding their personal creativity, personal and spiritual growth.
What is a GIM session like?
Many people are familiar with the idea of combining music and imagery in a healing manner. Most often this takes the form of music accompanied by a script with a goal of relaxation. The individual has no control over the flow or direction of the session.
In a typical GIM session, however, client (“traveler”) and therapist (“guide”) work together as a team. After a discussion of the traveler's current issues or concerns, a focus or intent for the session is chosen. The guide then selects a music program to support exploration of this intent. The music begins and the traveler verbally reports the spontaneous images, sensations, and emotions they experience as they arise. The guide supports and encourages this process, helping the traveler to stay with and deepen the imagery.
The experience of GIM is much like that of a “waking dream” - one enters into a dream-like state of imagery, symbolism, and metaphor with a conscious awareness of the process as it unfolds. This process is designed to result in insight, emotional release, and core integration of the body, mind, and spirit.
The average GIM session lasts about 90 minutes. This includes time for setting the intent and preparing for the music and imagery, the experience of the music and imagery itself, and time for processing and wrap-up after the music and imagery is complete.
